Phil Jagielka joined Everton from Sheffield United in summer 2007 for a bargain £4million and succeeded Phil Neville as Club captain six years after his arrival.

He went on to deliver 12 years of exemplary service for Everton, amassing 385 appearances and cementing his place as a modern day Toffees great. After it was confirmed Jagielka would be leaving the Club at the end of June 2019, Chairman Bill Kenwright described him as "one of Everton's greatest servants".

Manchester-born Jagielka was at Everton's Academy for a period in his teens before progressing through the ranks at Sheffield United, where he made more than 250 appearances in seven years and was ever-present in the team which won promotion to the top flight in 2005-06.

The defender made his Toffees debut as a substitute in a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in August 2007 before being handed his first start at Bolton Wanderers in a 2-1 win the following month.

Jagielka forged a strong understanding at the heart of the back four with Joleon Lescott and then Jospeh Yobo as Everton progressed to the semi-finals of the League Cup and UEFA Cup knockout stages in his first season with the Club.

He won the first of his 40 England caps against Trinidad and Tobago in June 2008 and had his maiden Three Lions start in a friendly meeting with Spain the following February.

Jagielka converted the penalty which sealed Everton's shootout victory over Manchester United in the 2009 FA Cup semi-final but a serious knee injury prevented him from featuring in the Wembley showpiece against Chelsea.

He returned to action in February 2010 and seven months later started a competitive game for England for the first time, a 4-0 thrashing of Bulgaria in a Wembley European Championship qualifier.

Jagielka played twice for England at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil before returning to Goodison for one of his finest individual campaigns to date.

Injuries limited Jagielka’s involvement in 2015-16, albeit he started 21 Premier League matches and played in every round of his side's run to the last four of the FA Cup – as well as featuring in a League Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

Jagielka played 27 matches the following season and scored three of his 18 Everton-career goals in successive games against Manchester United, Leicester City and Burnley towards the back end of the campaign.

The centre-half's service to the Club was recognised in October 2017, when a Goodison Park celebration night feted both Jagielka and fellow defender Leighton Baines, who similarly marked a decade at Goodison when the curtain went down on the 2016/17 season.

Jagielka's consistently excellent form in 2014-15 – when he started 37 top-flight matches and struck a blistering stoppage-time equaliser in the Anfield Merseyside derby – led to him sweeping the board at the Club's end-of-season awards, where he collected the Player-of-the-Season, Players'-Player-of-the-Season and Goal-of-the-Season prizes.

The evergreen Jagielka made 29 appearances in 2017-18 and established a reliable partnership with Michael Keane in the middle of the Blues' defence.

Jagielka scored his final goal for Everton in a 1-0 win over Arsenal at Goodison Park in April 2019.

A defender who displayed outstanding quality, consistency and leadership throughout his 12 years at the Club, Chairman Mr Kenwright hailed Jagielka as an individual who "epitomised what it is to be an Evertonian and will remain someone who embodies the spirit and values of the Blues".
