WATCH: Why Cottee's Debut Hat-Trick Almost Never Happened

It remains one of the most memorable debuts of any Everton player in history.

A British record £2.2million signing from West Ham United, all eyes were on Tony Cottee as he stepped out at Goodison Park against this Wednesday’s opponents Newcastle United for the opening fixture of the 1988/89 campaign.

The pressure was on the Londoner to hit the ground running and how he rose to that challenge, stealing in after Dave Beasant had fumbled a shot from Graeme Sharp to sweep home the opener with just 34 seconds on the clock.

It was some first touch, and it paved the way for the new boy to strike twice more either side of the break to cap a stunning start to life in royal blue and bag the first of six career hat-tricks for the Toffees.

Watch Cottee recall that famous afternoon, the weight of the British record price tag and the unheralded role defender Neil McDonald played in making possible his three-goal showing in the video above.
