Gomes' Form Rewarded With Portugal Recall

Andre Gomes has been selected in Portugal's squad for the country's forthcoming Nations League clashes with Italy and Poland.

Midfielder Gomes last featured for his national team in a friendly game against Holland in March but returns to the fold after starring in Everton's past three matches.

The 25-year-old made his debut for the Club in last month's 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace following a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring problem.

He subsequently started and finished the matches against Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion and is poised to continue in the Blues' engine room for Sunday's trip to Chelsea.

Capped 29 times by Portugal and a European Championship winner in 2016, Gomes will join up with Fernando Santos's squad after the weekend's encounter at Stamford Bridge.

Manager Santos takes his team to Milan's San Siro Stadium to face Italy on Saturday, November 17. Portugal, who have won both their Nations League fixtures, host Poland in Guimares three days later on Tuesday, November 20.

England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd, meanwhile, has called up Everton quartet Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ademola Lookman, Tom Davies and Kieran Dowell for friendly matches against Italy and Denmark.

The Young Lions secured their passage to next summer's European Under-21 Championship last month, Dowell scoring against Scotland as Boothroyd's side completed an unbeaten qualification campaign.

England begin their preparations for the finals with a game against Italy – joint hosts with San Marino of the tournament next June – in Ferrara on Thursday, November 15.

They then travel to Esbjerg to face fellow qualifiers Denmark on Tuesday, November 20.
