'Tougher Than The Scoreline Showed'

Ronald Koeman insisted he wanted to see more from his Everton side despite them putting four unanswered goals past Hull City.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted his first goal for the Toffees after just eight minutes, but it wasn’t until the Tigers were reduced to 10 men following Tom Huddlestone’s 73rd-minute red card that the hosts added further gloss to the scoreline.

Five minutes after Huddlestone’s departure, Enner Valencia smashed home from close range before Romelu Lukaku helped himself to a late brace.

Koeman explained why he'd earlier brought on Ramiro Funes Mori and changed to a five-man defence in order to keep a competitive Hull outfit at bay.

“Hull made it really difficult,” he said. “They had a big chance for 1-1 and even in the second half I needed to change the system. I brought Funes in to help control the game.

“I’m happy that I changed the system because we got control of the game back. Of course, the red card is a big reason we won the game with four goals.

“After they went down to 11 against 10 and the second goal we knew we would kill the game and might get some more chances. But it was tougher than the final result reflected. Even if you see the final result, I don’t think that’s the best we have played at home.”

Even after the early goal, Everton found it difficult to break down Hull’s five-man defence. Seamus Coleman saw a shot saved by Tigers keeper Eldin Jakupovic, while Lukaku blasted an effort over the bar after the break.

Koeman admitted the visitors made it hard for his side to maintain control of the game. He added: “We started really aggressive and the first goal is from a great attack. It is really good movement from Tom Davies and the final pass is outstanding.

“But it is always difficult to play against five defenders, and Hull were playing with three centre-backs. It made it tough and we did not control the game. We were running too much and weren’t in positions to control the game.”
